Staying Focused in the Storm

Peter Boat

Do you ever stop and think about what it was like for Peter to walk on water?  What was going through his head as he lifted his foot over the side of the boat?  The waves hitting his side.  He begins to put his foot down and…what did it feel like?  Was it hard was it soft?

Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.  But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”  “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.  But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”  Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”  And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.

There are so many things about this story that I love.  There are so many things to take out of it.  But lets take a closer look at Peter’s actions here and how it can pertain to our life.

First, you have to love the confidence that Peter expresses right off the bat (well, after he freaks out that it might be a ghost – but that is a separate story all together).  He tells Jesus – if it is you, then tell me to come out to you.  Essentially – if it is you, then you can hold me up in what seems to be an impossible task.

So he does.  He gets out of the boat and starts his walking.  And he does it.  We don’t really know how long Peter was out there – it could have been a few minutes or it could have been an hour.

But then the change happens – Peter sees the wind, gets scared and sinks.

I think there are a few key items to take a way here:

1. If Jesus calls us to something – no matter how impossible it seems – we can accomplish anything!

Peter knew if Jesus told him to walk on water it could be done.  He had absolute faith in what he was capable of in Jesus.

2. Storms will come, even when we are operating in our calling.

There are so many places throughout the Word that shows trials and storms will come.  And to me, there is no better example then here.  Peter is out on the water and it says he sees the wind starting to pick up.  Even when he was in the middle of God’s Will – the storm came.

3. If we take our eyes off Jesus, we will start to sink.

Peter looked at the storm – the opposition or challenge.  For a split second he doubted his ability.  And in that split second, he started to sink, crying out to Jesus “save me!”.

4. Jesus will always be our savior.

When Peter cried out, Jesus came to the rescue.  It is very important to note Jesus’ words to Peter “why did you doubt?”

We can do the same as Peter.  We to can act in seemingly impossible arenas if we simply keep our eyes affixed to Him that matters and not on the storms that are coming in around us.

He has called you to do the impossible.  Don’t doubt that.  Lock eyes with Him.  Stay focused on Him.  If you focus on the storm, you will sink – but if you focus on Him, you will accomplish the impossible.

Question: What do you do to stay focused on Him?
